Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a non-invasive method of removing excess fluid and waste materials from the body through a very specific type of skin treatment.
MLD is a very light skin treatment which targets the lymphatic system and in particular the initial lymph vessels which lie just below the surface of the skin.
- The gentle rhythmic pumping movements encourage/stimulate these tiny vessels to increase their intake of interstitial fluid (lymph), which in turn increases the removal of excess fluid, toxins and waste removal through the lymphatic system from the tissues.
- MLD massage has a relaxing and calming effect on the body due to its light and repetitive movements and is indeed more relaxing than a conventional massage. Its calming effects help reduce stress levels and lower blood pressure. An analgesic (pain-relieving) effect can also be achieved. An overall improvement of well-being is felt.
- Due to its decongestive effects MLD speeds up the healing process and can help reduce the appearance of scars, reduce puffiness, inflammation and bruising.
- MLD can be used to improve the healing process and reduce recovery time after cosmetic surgery
MLD is a recommended treatment for primary and secondary lymphoedema reduction. Compression garments are often used in conjunction with massage, to achieve the best possible results.
